Fascia is the connective tissue that wraps around your muscles, bones, organs, nerves, veins and arteries, supporting and protecting them. It is a multilayered continuous sheet connected from your head to your toes. For a variety of reasons, fascia can become restricted, resulting in muscle tension, pain, and reduced blood flow, often affecting areas further away from where the restrictions are.
Your therapist will identify problem areas of your body and will then applying gentle but sustained pressure to release fascia. Its performed directly on skin with little or usually without oil and with slower movements than your regular massage. The aim is to release the layers so structures can slide and glide effectively without restrictions. It also has a profound effect on calming the nervous system, getting it out of fight or flight response we are often in due to stress, trauma and the busy lives we live these days.
Due to being highly effective despite the more gentle approach and for having a deeper relaxing effect, it's a great choice of therapy for sufferers of fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions where the source of pain is at times hard to be identified yet very real and often debilitating for the person having to live with it.
